[Jan Nisar Akhtar (February 14, 1914 – August 19, 1976) was an important 20th century Indian Urdu poet and lyricist of Bollywood. He was born in 1914, in Gwalior, into a family of Sunni theologians, scholars and poets. Jaan Nisar did his B. A. Honours and M. A. from Aligarh Muslim University and taught Urdu at Victoria College, Gwalior and Hamidia College, Bhopal. He then moved to Mumbai for writing lyrics of Hindi cinema. (The present day famous Bollywood lyricist Javed Akhtar is one of his two sons.)
His poetry was secular and like many of progressive writers of his generation talked of freedom, dignity, economic exploitation and other issues gleaming of the leftist leanings. He was a member of the Progressive Writers' Association. He received the 1976 Sahitya Akademi Award in Urdu by Sahitya Akademi for his poetry collection ---- "Khaak-e-dil" (The Ashes of Heart").
Here I present a Ghazal written by him for the connoisseurs. The first couplet of this Ghazal is quite famous :
Ash'aar mere yuN to zamaane ke liye haiN, kuchh she'r faqat unko sunaane ke liye haiN
(Although my poems are meant for the whole world, There are some couplets meant just for the beloved) ]
देखूं तेरे हाथों को तो लगता है, तेरे हाथ;
मंदिर में फ़क़त दीप जलाने के लिए हैं !
ये इल्म का सौदा, ये रिसाले , ये किताबें ;
एक शख्स की यादों को भुलाने के लिए हैं !!
